Sri Lanka March inbound surges

first_imgSri Lanka’s inbound tourism almost doubled last month, increasing by up to 43.5 percent compared to the same month last year.The jump to 75,130 visitors was the highest recorded figure in arrivals for a month since December 2010 and was lead by travellers from South Asia and European markets, Lanka Business Online reported.According to data retrieved a tourism promotion office, arrivals from Western Europe increasing by 37.6 percent to 30,003 for the month, with visitors from Sweden jumping by 260 percent to 1,446 while the French market rose by 105 percent to 5,899. Meanwhile, South Asian tourism into Sri Lanka jumped 64.5 percent, with Pakistan leading the hike with a 237.7 percent increase in visitors, followed by India with a 64.5 percent surge. There was also a 50 percent rise in tourism from Australia and New Zealand compared to March last year as well as a 29.3 percent rise from East Asia and a 16.8 percent rise from the US.  Last year Sri Lanka saw a 46 percent rise in tourist arrivals, to 654,476 compared to the corresponding year.
